PHASE 2- WEEK 2

2nd week of my teaching practice started on a good note with a special assembly being held to honor the famous Malayalam poetess Smt. Sugathakumari, as part of the concluding ceremony of National Reading Week celebrations. Students recited  lines from her famous poems. In my classes,  I taught the rest of the chapter and showed them a power point presentation with pictures related to the chapter. Visual and auditory elements helped in better retention and recall of information.  On day 6, I gave my students a group activity:- to write the script and conduct a role-play involving the priest and the boy from the lesson ‘The Boy Who Drew Cats’. It fostered creative thinking as students invent scenarios and dialogues, making the learning process more engaging and enjoyable. On day 7,A special assembly was being conducted as it was International Day against Drug Abuse. The PTA president held a speech to spread awareness on the harmful effects of drugs. The students were also made to  take an oath . In my classes, I made students discuss and write the answers to the  textual questions from the lesson. I was able to set up a collaborative learning environment in the classroom. Group discussions expose students to a variety of perspectives, broadening their understanding and appreciation of different viewpoints. Group discussions provide opportunities for students to practice speaking and listening, enhancing their verbal and non-verbal communication abilities. On day 8, I conducted a diagnostic test in my classes to assess their understanding of active and passive voice. Most of the students showcased average performance in the test. On day 9, I asked students some interesting questions related to Taj Mahal and showed pictures of Shah Jahan, Mumtaz Mahal and Taj Mahal, as part of providing entry activity and link talk to their new chapter “Taj Mahal”. I also provided them an overview regarding the context of building the magnificent monument. Providing such background information before teaching the poem about the Taj Mahal can significantly enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of the poem.

During the whole week, I had exam duty in some classes as  unit test was being conducted in the school. I also went to serve mid day meals and had bus duty after the working hours. One of the highlights this week was my improvement in classroom management. I implemented some strategies  such as establishing clear rules and using positive reinforcement. These approaches helped create a more orderly and respectful classroom environment, allowing lessons to proceed more smoothly.
