PHASE 2- WEEK 1

My teaching practice session as part of B.Ed  3rd semester curriculum started on 18 June  2024 in Government Girls’  Higher Secondary School, Malayinkeezh. On the first day, I reached the school at 9: 00 am and took part in the Assembly. After that I met the headmistress Leena ma'am and signed on our attendance register. We were a group of 3 Students. I was assigned with classes 8 C, 8 D, and 8 F. I conducted an ice-breaking session in these classes. It helped me to develop an amiable environment within the classroom and build a rapport with students. On day 2, there was morning assembly to commemorate National Reading Day. During the assembly, students performed role-play to spread awareness on the importance of developing the habit of reading. Several famous books were introduced and a quiz was conducted. Two students were awarded for reading the highest number of books during summer vacation. A book exhibition was also being conducted in the school by Chintha Publications. I conducted an entry activity in my classes for teaching the lesson, ‘The Boy Who Drew Cats’. I showed them profile chart of the author and presented some pictures related to the story using ICT. On day 3,I started teaching the few  paragraphs of the story. I used flashcards to provide meanings of difficult words. Before teaching the story , I provided background information on Japanese culture and their folk tales. This was essential in helping students connect with the story and appreciate its cultural significance. On day 4, I taught some more paragraphs of the story using flashcards and ICT. I also made students read the portion loudly. To deepen their comprehension, I posed open-ended questions that prompted critical thinking.

I also had other duties like substitution, serving the mid day meal, and bus duty after the class hours. There were also various competitions happening in relation to celebration of Reading Week. The first week in the school started with a bit of nervousness and apprehension but ended up on a good note, as I was gradually able to build a good rapport with my students. I was also able to understand my weaknesses and started working on it.
